The French Explorers

This is the story of how unlucky the French were in their explorations in the South Pacific. Bougainville was prevented from discovering the east coast of Australia by the Great Barrier Reef in 1768. La Pérouse sailed away from Botany Bay in 1788, never to be seen again. Then from about 1758, the French leaders were distracted by wars and revolutions culminating in their defeat by the British in the battles of Trafalgar in 1805 and Waterloo in 1815. Then there were more revolutions in 1830 and 1840. It is not surprising that the French lost interest in the colonisation of Australia.
