The Spanish Explorers

The ambitions of King Charles I for Spain to explore the world must have been set back by the disastrous voyage of Magellan from 1519 to 1522 with the terrible loss of life and only one ship out of five returning home. The complete loss of all the ships in the Spanish explorer Loaisa’s expedition from 1525 to 1536, must have been a greater blow. It was not until that nation had established a settlement in the Philippines in 1565 that Spain became a significant power in the Pacific region.
